From experience we know that many businesses do not PAT test because it is not a legal requirement.
However the Electricity at Work Regulations state you have a duty of care to your employees, guests and other visitors to your business premises. Should an accident occur you may find yourself responsible.
Based on the IEE Code of Practise (3rd Edition Feb 2008).electrical appliances should be inspected at regular intervals of between 1 month and 4 years depending on their application and type. Though more typically its between 12 and 24 months.
You can if you wish inspect your own electrical appliances, as a minimum you should visually inspect each appliance and its cord on an annual basis and document the results, alternatively you could ask your normal electrician though this can lead to a conflict of interests, also you should ask for a copy of the electricians Certificate of Competency in PAT testing, typically C&G 2377 or NICEIC or SELECT.
